My Five-year old lost consciousness again
I took “K” to the park with her red rubber ball yesterday and we were having a great time playing soccer. After about 40 minutes of playing she tripped over the ball when she went to kick it and fell onto the ball. Her little bottom bounced off the ball and she landed on the ground. She started crying then suddenly stopped crying but her face remained the same as if she was still crying. Then her eyes rolled back and she started convulsing.
Believe it or not with my daughter this is what a breath holding spell looks like. Unlike most children who have these she doesn’t immediately start breathing again. This meant that instead of one quick trip to the pediatrician to get a diagnosis we had several along with trips to the ER and a horrid amount of tests and wires attached to her head and chest etc.
This is the first one she has had in about a year.
Back to what happened yesterday though I spent a few minutes cuddling her in the park and slapping her tiny cheek while repeating common baby breath, and a crowd gathered around of teenagers and a couple parents (1 of which dialed 911 and then had to explain to them its okay no ambulance necessary) Followed of course by a couple worried moms trying to convince me to take her right to the emergency room, while I understand the concern they have for my child and appreciate it (I know how scary it looks I thought my baby was dying many times when it happened) It is really frustrating to have to argue with worried onlookers when I am trying to comfort my daughter who wakes up pretty freaked out and hysterical from these things.
Luckily overtime these happen alot less frequently, this is the first one in about a year and hopefully the last forever.
The very first one of these she had was when she was 6 months old and it was the scariest moment of my life I thought my baby was dying in my arms… my husband was downstairs doing laundry when it happened and I let out some blood curdling screams for help then started running for the door with her in my arms our dog ran downstairs and bit my husband right in the behind as he somehow didnt hear me (he is hard of hearing) our neighbour ran to our house and stopped me at the door (thank god the neighbour had more sense then me what was I going to do run to the hospital) the baby recovered a few second later after my very freaked out husband pulled her from my arms and we drove her to the hospital (without her car seat I held her, again not the best idea).
Okay as this has no become a random rant let me get to the point.
If you are ever out and you see a child having a seizure or any kind out fit sure call 911 it might just be neccesary but please dont argue with the parent over what you think should be done, or that you dont think the diagnosis is correct etc… while your intentions are surely good the effect that this has is not. The parents are dealing with something more important at that moment so for gods sakes leave them alone or simply ask if there is something you can do to help.

Yeah I understand how scary it was for them to watch It’s just frustrating that there always seems to be one in the crowd that feels the need to interfere…. and she really needs some quiet cuddle time time to get her bearings afterwords.
I did appreciate the teen that called 911 as they ran across the field though that was actually very good thinking on the part of the child even if it was unnecessary and I told her that as I wouldn’t want her to hesitate to call again when it was really necessary.
“k” was fine in just a few minutes and we went and got a Popsicle from the store and went on with our day. I do wonder why it happened again after so long as they said it would be gone by now so we will take a trip to the doctors next week to let the doctor know it happened again.
